Carbon dioxide removals
Keeping 1.5°C Alive: Closing the Gap in the 2020s, version 1.0, published by the Energy Transitions Commission in September 2021, defines carbon dioxide removals (CDR), sometimes shortened to ‘carbon removals’ as: ‘…actions such as NCS (Natural Climate Solutions) or DACCS (Direct air carbon capture and storage) that can result in a net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.’
Global Warming of 1.5 ºC, Glossary, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018, defines carbon dioxide removal as: 'Anthropogenic activities removing CO2 from the atmosphere and durably storing it in geological, terrestrial, or ocean reservoirs, or in products. It includes existing and potential anthropogenic enhancement of biological or geochemical sinks and direct air capture and storage, but excludes natural CO2 uptake not directly caused by human activities.’
